Irving Penn and Andre Kertesz in 1971 @ Alexey Brodovitch opening in Phili

When I was a young photographer I happen to meet Irving Penn at an Alexey Brodovitch opening in Philadelphia.

I notice that Irving Penn was just leaving the opening and I ask Penn if I could take a quick shot. He agreed.

I got back to NYC and made the print. "Penn in a Budda state!" with his eye's closed....

I called Penn up and went up to his studio on 40th street near Brant Park what a super studio north light windows..

I give him the print and crop out the old man. When I showed it to Penn he said,

"Why did you crop out the other person" I said why,

He said "Thats Andre Kertesz"

I rushed back to Harvey LLoyds darkroom and made a new print leaving Kertesz in the photograph.

Then return with the new print to Penn he was very pleased.

Then called Kertesz up and give him a print. I became a regular to visit him at in his home on Fifth Avenue.

near Washington Square Park. Where I took a photo of him reading......

Years later I went to see Penn in his new studio on Fifth Ave. in the photo district with 20 of my students from Sweden.

He had just won the Haselblad award and would meet me and the students.

Just before leaving his studio,  I re-introduce myself to him that I was the young photographer who took the photo of him and Kertesz in 1971.

He told me he was just looking at my photo's. He then took me into his other office and open up a folder Called Photo's of Penn.....

And sure enough there were the two version in a little contact form with my credit @ Todd Weinstein. That made my day......

I will miss him and his wonderful work for ever....
